Davao Museum presents DAVAO KUO: The Abaca, the Japanese and the Making of Davao!

Starting May 17, the Davao Museum of History and Ethnography (DMHE) will exhibit DAVAO KUO: The Abaca, the Japanese and the Making of Davao. This six-month exhibit will be held in cooperation with the Consular Office of Japan in Davao (COJD) and sponsored by the Embassy of Japan in Manila (EOJ).  The exhibit looks into Davao society’s Japanese heritage during the development of the abaca plantation industry in the early 1900s and the historic rise in Japanese migration to the province that accompanied it.

In 1939, there were around 29,000 Japanese in the Philippines and of this number more than 17,000 Japanese were in Davao working in various enterprises including in the abaca plantation in Mintal and Toril.

The exhibit is also very timely since Davao City recently celebrated its 75th founding anniversary. According to some historians, one of the major reasons why Davao was made into a chartered city in 1936 was due to the socio-economic progress brought in part by the Japanese investors who established wide commercial interests such as copra, timber, fishing and import-export trading. The Japanese also shared their knowledge on how to improve cultivation and this has led agriculture to become the core of the province’s economic prosperity at that time.

Japanese Consul Kazuhiko Anzai, Director of the COJD, said that he is delighted to cooperate with the DMHE in holding the historical exhibit that will run until October 2012.  Consul Anzai said that he hopes that the exhibit will further strengthen the mutual understanding between Japanese and Filipinos through the pictures and artifacts from the period.  He also enjoined the Japanese residents here and the Davaoeños to work and collaborate with each other to further develop this beautiful city with a renewed bilateral relationship as equal partners.

The Davao Museum of History and Ethnography is located at Insular Village, Phase 1, Lanang, Davao City. Those with inquiries or who are interested for tour reservations may contact the Davao Museum of History and Ethnography at (082) 233-1734.

Ban on non-biodegradable plastic bags and polystyrene foam in Davao City starts June 28, 2012!

Starting June 28, 2012 the use of non-biodegradable plastic bags and polystyrene foam as food and beverage containers is banned in Davao City.

This new law was made via a city ordinance in Davao City.

By Section 7, Article V of the Ordinance 0361 series of 2010 or the Davao City Ecological Solid Waste Management Ordinance of 2009.

This another first here in Mindanao.

Biodegradable plastic bags can still be used in the city. I laud the city government for this ordinance to help our degrading environment through the use of these non-biodegradable plastic bags ans polysterene foams.

I wonder how the market will responds to this new development.

Those who violate the provision starting June 28 will be fined P300 and have to undergo a mandatory seminar for first offense; P500 and a five-day community service for second-time offenders; and P1,000 or a 10-day community service for third-time violators.

Fourth-time violators will be sued in court, will be fined between P2,000 to P5,000 and stand to be imprisoned for six months.

Terminal Fee for domestic flights to be included in air fare starting August 1!

The Depart of Transportation and Communications (DOTC) Secretary Mar Roxas, reports that starting August 1, 2012,  “the terminal fees for domestic flights will be included in the prices of plane tickets.”

The report noted: “The scheme will eventually be implemented at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport, with a software system being set up to bundle terminal fees with air fares being charged by airlines.” Roxas revealed that “the Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) shouldered the costs of setting up a software solution to make possible a bundled collection of terminal fees.”

The big question is, will this new Terminal fee includes all airports in the Philippines?

Foreigners living in Davao Area told to claim I-Card!

THE Bureau of Immigration (BI) reminded foreigners staying in Davao Region to claim their alien certificate card (ACR I-Card) at the BI regional office in Davao City.

In the official website of BI, Commissioner Ricardo David Jr. appealed to the foreigners concerned to get their ACR I-Card so they will not encounter problems on their immigration status.

David said the I-Card is an “important and indispensable” document that every foreigner, who holds a non-immigrant or immigrant visa in the Philippines, must obtain.

He said a foreigner, who holds a non-immigrant or immigrant visa, should present the I-Card to immigration officers at a Philippine port of entry every time he or she enters or exits the country.

David warned that the visa of a foreigner will be downgraded to tourist, if one arrives or departs the country without the I-Card.

“This card is proof of a foreigner’s legal residence status. Without it, a foreigner is deemed improperly documented and may be sanctioned for violating our immigration and alien registration laws,” he added.

BI Executive Director Eric Dimaculangan said many of the unclaimed I-Cards have been in his office for several months now.

“I cannot understand why the owners of these I-Cards do not bother to claim them. Perhaps, they do not know how very important these cards are,” Dimaculangan said.

He also advised foreigners who applied for I-Card issuance to check with the BI website at www.immigration.gov.ph if their cards are ready for release.

Under the rules, foreigners, whose petition for an immigrant or non-immigrant visa was approved by the BI, must apply for their I-Card to perfect their residence status in the country.

The I-Card also serves as the foreigners’ reentry and exit permit, thus they must bring it whenever they travel in and out of the country.

2nd International Mount Apo Boulder Face Challenge winners revealed!

Filipinos again ruled the 2nd International Mount Apo Boulder Face Challenge which concluded Sunday with the Manila-based Team Bebang crossing the finish line at 7:02 a.m.

Team Bebang racers Cresenciano and Gerald Sabal, both are Philippine Army soldiers, cross the finish line in Sta. Cruz Davao del Sur after almost 16 hours of endurance race during the 2nd International Boulder Face challenge involving four disciplines -- mountain biking, trekking, water tubing, and running -- from Sta. Cruz, Davao del Sur to the peak of Mt. Apo and back within 24 hours. KEITH BACONGCO/InterAksyon.com

Team Bebang, whose members are soldiers of the Philippine Army, won the competition’s top prize of P150,000, with a total clock time of 15:38:33. The team is composed of brothers Cresenciano and Gerald Sabal, and Jhanalodin Lucman.

In second place was Team Carmen of Davao del Norte composed of Jonathan Pido, Ronald Dagaang, Edwin Bueno (15:59:18.), winning P100,000. In third place and winning P75,000 was Team Apo Ville from Digos, Davao del Sur composed of Marcial Catanggui, Romeo Mascardo Jr., and Hilario Ladra (17:12:58).

Fourth to eight place finishers win P10,000 per team. According to the race organizers, this is the biggest set of prizes among adventure races in the country.

The Mount Apo Boulder Face Challenge is one of the toughest adventure races in the Philippines. It is a 24-hour extreme challenge using various disciplines such as mountain biking, trekking, water tubing, and road running.

Participants in the race had to navigate through the town’s tough trails and raging rivers, scaled the boulder face of Mount Apo, culminating in the skyline of the country’s highest mountain which tops at 10,000 feet.

This year’s race attracted 13 foreign and 35 local teams, according to Arturo Boncato, Jr., regional director for the Department of Tourism-Davao, co-organizer of the event. Some of the countries represented were Australia, Hong Kong, Singapore, Vietnam, and Indonesia.

Each participating team is composed of two racers and one handling logistics, and covered a distance of 90.3 km, “which is longer than the Iron Man,” an international triathlon event, he noted. The Mount Apo Boulder Face Challenge may be considered “tougher” because the racers also have a mountain to climb, and had to battle freezing temperatures at the peak.

He explained that most of the foreign teams were “first time racers, and were unfamiliar with the terrain. It also rained hard in the mountain and at the peak yesterday that slowed them down.”

Team Champion Systems Adventure from Hong Kong was the first foreign team that made it through the finish line and was fifth in overall ranking. “The team is composed of an Australian living in Beijing, and an American living in Hong Kong. Their logistics guy is Filipino,” said Boncato.

He added that while Team Bebang’s members were also first-time climbers of Mount Apo, they hail from Sultan Kudarat “and are known marathon champions. The race has trekking and running as the longest leg,” giving them a possible edge over the other racers.

Cresenciano Sabal has won the national Milo marathon three times. He and his brother participated in the 2011 CamSur Marathon, a qualifier for the Boston Marathon.

Amid light rainshowers, the event kicked off at 6 a.m. Saturday with a mountain bike race starting from the Sta. Cruz municipal plaza.

After the biking leg, racers had to scale the boulder face of Mount Apo, whose peak was first reached at 3 p.m. by Team Carmen. Team Bebang reached the summit 14 minutes later, followed by Team Apo Ville, then Team Champion Adventure.

Team Carmen head Pido, a patrol officer by profession, and his partner last year, Angelito Sibuyan, won the 2011 challenge with a record of 22 hours, 51 minutes, and 42 seconds. They, however, formed separate teams this year.

By 7 p.m. Saturday night, all teams were making their way to Sibulan River pitstop for an overnight rest. Team Bebang reached the Sibulan pit stop at 9:30 p.m., closely followed by Team Carmen and the others.

The race resumed at 5:30 a.m. Sunday riding down the river in a water tube, then running back on foot toward the finish line at the municipal plaza.

According to Boncato, while Team Carmen was the early forerunner in the event, Dagaang slightly injured his foot, which slowed them down. Former Team Carmen member and last year’s co-champion, Sibuyan, wasn’t so lucky either, and was unable to finish the race also due to an injury.

The Mount Apo Boulder Face Challenge is one of the highlights of the annual Pista sa Kinaiyahan (Feast of the Environment) of the municipality of Sta. Cruz. The Boulder Face Challenge was first held in 2008, but last year, DOT-Davao region and the Sta. Cruz municipality decided to encourage international teams to participate as well.

Boncato said the annual competition has made Davao region a leading destination for eco-adventure tourism. It has also helped increase awareness about the importance of protecting the environment.

Declared a national park in 1936 and a protected area in 2004, Mount Apo is home to the Philippine eagle, and hundreds of other critically threatened bird and plant species. The national park is on the tentative list of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (Unesco) as a Heritage Site.

Mount Apo is an active volcano, and at 10,000 feet, is the highest point in the Philippines.

Data from the Sta. Cruz municipality showed 923 climbed Mount Apo using the Sta. Cruz trail in 2011, up 19 percent from 2010. There are two other major trails going up the mountain’s summit from the North Cotobato side.

The 2nd International Mount Apo Boulder Face Challenge was also supported by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources-Region 11, Department of Trade and Industry-Davao del Sur, San Miguel Corp., Aboitiz Power Corp.-Hedcor Sibulan Inc.; Columbia Sportswear Co., Primer Group of Companies, Recreational Outdoor Exchange, and Zest Air.
