Davao City Mayor nominated in World Mayor awards!

DAVAO City Mayor Sara Duterte is nominated to the prestigious World Mayor Award along with two other Philippine mayors and 85 others from the rest of the world.

The long list will however be trimmed down to 25 by June, after which the winner will be announced by December 2012.

Aside from Duterte-Carpio, other Philippine mayors nominated are Mayor Edgardo Pamintuan of Angeles City and Mayor Alfredo Lim of Manila.

Among the 88 official candidates are 16 mayors from North America, 13 mayors from Latin America, 30 mayors from Europe, 19 mayors from Asia, three mayors from Australasia and seven mayors from Africa.

Based on the World Mayor website www.worldmayor.com, they will still be receiving nominations from individuals and organizations until middle of May 2012.

When contemplating the shortlist for the 2012 World Mayor Prize, the City Mayors Foundation said they will take into account the number of nominations a mayor has received from separate individuals and organizations and, more importantly, the persuasiveness of supporting statements.

There is a possibility though for Duterte-Carpio not to qualify as according to the foundation, they are seeking candidates who “are at least in their second term of office.” The mayor is only in her first term of office. She was however a vice mayor before becoming the mayor of Davao.

In a text message, Duterte-Carpio said she could not believe on her nomination.

“Serious ba na? Kaulaw ana oi. Kinsa nagnominate? (Is that serious. That is embarrassing. Who nominated me?),” she said.

The City Mayors Foundation, the international think tank on urban affairs, organized the World Mayor Project and awards the World Mayor Prize. The prize, which has been given since 2004, honors mayors with the vision, passion and skills to make their cities incredible places to live, work and visit.

The World Mayor Project aims to show what outstanding mayors can achieve and raise their profiles nationally and internationally.

The organizers of the World Mayor Project are looking for city leaders who excel in qualities like leadership and vision, management abilities and integrity, social and economic awareness, ability to provide security and to protect the environment as well as the will and ability to foster good relations between communities from different cultural, racial and social backgrounds.

The winner receives the artistically acclaimed World Mayor trophy, while the runner-up is given the World Mayor commendation.

Since the establishment of the awards in 2004, five nominated city mayors from the Philippines made it among the finalists, with three of them ranking among the top 10:

2005: Oscar Rodriguez of San Fernando, Pampanga (still incumbent mayor) – ranked 4th

2006: Jejomar Binay of Makati City (now Vice President) – ranked 4th

Davao’s BluGre Durian Coffee goes International!

The coffee shop that brought the coffee lifestyle to Davao more than a decade ago is now eyeing to bring Davao City to the world.

BluGre Café, whose name has become synonymous with Davao City for concocting the coffee blend mixed with the pulp of Davao’s icon fruit durian, is finally setting its eyes not only on major cities in the country but also in major cities in Asia, Canada and the US.

OWNER Gatchie Gatchalian. Photo by Germelina Lacorte, Inquirer Mindanao

“Twenty for 2012,” says BluGre coffee owner Gatchie Gatchalian, referring to the 20 stores they are set to open for the year 2012.

Gatchalian says they have inked an agreement with a number of partners to open branches, targeting durian-eating countries like Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand; and cities with large concentration of Filipinos, including Las Vegas in the US, Toronto in Canada and Adelaide, Australia.

“We are going to make our presence felt in these places because these are cities and countries where our partners are based,” he says.

He remembers how he, himself, a coffee lover, and wife Larchie, first opened its Davao branch in 1998 as a spinoff of the fashion brand they are selling. But even from the beginning, Gatchalian says he already recognized the need to make his brand stand out by making a difference in the highly-competitive market.

“Even before we opened, I already made sure, that we should have something different to offer, something that really speaks about Davao,” he says. “That’s how we started experimenting with durian coffee.”

Gatchie says not all people come to like the durian fruit the first time they taste it, but coffee tends to drown out its pungent taste and masks its strong and disagreeable smell, that’s why the durian coffee could be a good introduction to the actual fruit.

“Offering them durian coffee could be the first step in introducing the fruit to non-durian eaters,” says Gatchie, who grew up in Manila and did not take to the fruit easily the first time he tasted it.

“Like I did, not all people would come to like the fruit immediately,” he says. “But if you do it in the coffee, the coffee covers its strong and disagreeable smell, that’s the first step,” he says, “Soon afterwards, they can eat the durian fruit, itself.”

When BluGre opened its first branch at the LandCo building in 1998, the coffee culture has not yet swept Davao. But when young urban professionals and students discovered the pleasure of hanging around the cozy, well-designed interiors, having long intimate conversations or simply relaxing in its quiet ambiance, word got around, giving birth to the coffee lifestyle of the Davaoeños. This triggered the sprouting of more coffee shops all over Davao, so that, in one of the press briefing in the late 90s, night bars had complained of thinning crowds as more people hang around cafes at night.

BluGre has not only become popular among the locales but also among travelers and visitors.

“When you’re from Manila, you will likely look for something different when you      arrive in Davao, something you have not tasted before, and that’s why they continue to come to BluGre,” he says.

He admits, too, that sales was temporarily affected by the coming in of Starbucks in Davao in May last year but sales perked up again as visitors continue to search for the coffee shop that “truly reflects” the tastes of Davao.

Aside from the durian coffee, BluGre also offers the usual fare of latte and mocha; and a number of bestselling cakes and pastries. BluGre sources most of its Philippine coffee beans from the Mountain Province; so, to ensure product quality in all of the BluGre outlets, they have organized a quality control team to maintain and ensure the consistency of their product, Gatchie says.

“That we brought the coffee culture to Davao, that is our claim to fame, so the whole country wrote about it. For a while BluGre has become Davaoeños’ official drink,” he says.

He considers his brand positioning so successful that even their durian coffee was being copied by newcomers. “But what could be a greater flattery?” he asks.

“In Davao, they say there are already 280 coffee shops, matira ang matibay (only the fittest will survive),” Gatchie say.

“But we alone can claim to have started the coffee culture in Davao since 1998 and we’ll make sure we will continue that,” he says. “We will continue to capitalize on durian coffee, targeting durian eating countries abroad, which include Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand.”

“We will also be targeting Davaoeños abroad,” he says.

Gatchie says he is thankful that Davao has been treating BluGre as their own brand but they had to set their eyes beyond the country if they build on what they have done.

“We plan to go where there is a concentration of Filipinos,” he says. “Our slogan is bring Davao to the world.”

Pinsker’s hawk-eagle 1st in captivity to be hatched, bred in Davao!

DAVAO CITY—After a successful Philippine eagle captive breeding program that spanned two decades, the Philippine Eagle Foundation (PEF) on Saturday announced that it has successfully bred and hatched another threatened species of bird of prey.

Dennis Salvador, the PEF director, said the first Pinsker’s hawk-eagle (Nisaetus pinskeri) bred in captivity broke its shell on April 2 at the PEF Center in Malagos village in Calinan district here.

The Pinsker’s hawk-eagle is endemic to the Philippines and known to thrive in the subtropical or tropical moist lowland forest. It belongs to the Acciptridae family and is considered threatened because of the loss of its natural habitat.

Salvador said the first Pinsker’s hawk-eagle bred in captivity was the product of a natural pair. It weighed a mere 57.2 grams.

“We have to carefully and constantly monitor the chick and make notes on its progress since it is the first Pinsker’s hawk-eagle hatched under our breeding program,” Salvador said.

Real challenge

Salvador said ensuring the Pinsker’s hawk-eagle’s survival in the wild is a real challenge especially with the “fast diminishing forests and destruction of their habitats.”

“We need everyone’s contribution to ensure that the Pinsker’s hawk-eagle population will increase, especially in the wild,” Salvador added.

The PEF, a nonprofit, nongovernment organization focused on saving the Philippine eagle and its habitat, made a breakthrough in January 1992 with the birth of Pag-asa, the first Philippine eagle bred and hatched in captivity and conceived through artificial insemination.

The successful hatching was the result of 10 years of research and experimentation on the country’s national bird in an effort to beef up the dwindling eagle population in the country.

Before Pag-asa, only 37 eagles had been identified to exist in the Philippines—13 in captivity and 24 associated with wild nests.

The PEF has successfully bred over 20 eagles since then.

Kabayan soars

In April 2004, Kabayan, a product of artificial insemination, became the first captive-bred eagle to be released to the wild. He was, however, found dead nine months later after he perched on a high-voltage power line and was electrocuted.

Hatched in 2002, Kabayan’s release was part of a reintroduction program to augment eagle populations in the wild, according to the PEF.

The Philippine eagle is a 3-foot-tall rainforest raptor with a wingspan of 7 feet—the broadest in the world. Deforestation and hunting have threatened its survival.

As of 2011, PEF estimates that there are some 400 pairs of these eagles in the islands of Luzon, Samar, Leyte and Mindanao. Thirty-six eagles, 18 of them bred in captivity, are housed at the PEF Center.

Besides the Philippine eagle, another threatened and endangered bird was successfully bred and hatched in captivity in the country.

A Philippine eagle-owl, which is endemic to the country, was hatched in Negros Occidental in November 2005, the first time a bird of that species was successfully hatched in captivity, according to the Negros Forests and Ecological Foundation Inc.

Model breed

Salvador said they hoped to replicate the success of their Philippine eagle breeding program in the newly conceived Pinsker’s hawk-eagle breeding program.

“Hopefully, it will survive and we will be able to improve our breeding techniques of this species through this experience,” he said, referring to the recently hatched chick.

Salvador said the gender of the chick would be known four to five years from now, the period within which Pinsker’s hawk-eagles mature.

The parents of the chick Pinsker’s hawk-eagle are male Gino, which was captured in Mlang, and a female code-named FAMSG, which was captured in Maguindanao.

PNoy: Mindanaoans have to pay more to have uninterrupted electricity!

President Benigno Aquino led the Mindanao Energy Summit in Davao City, as Mindanao suffers from a power shortage.

In his speech, the President said there are investors willing to invest in Mindanao, but people in the region should accept a hike in electricity rates.

“How can you entice anyone to invest if their generating cost is more than their selling cost? The simple truth is, we can have a lot more energy but we have to provide the incentives for businesses to come here to put up those plants for there will be a change in how much have to pay. We will have to pay, perhaps a bit more,” Aquino said.

“Of our P1.8 trillion budget, only P400 billion is programmable. Can government pay for new plants and old loans and still provide the services and facilities you need? You have to pay more because this is the reality of economics, not the rhetoric of politics. Everything has its price, we have to pay for a real service. There are actually just 2 real choices, pay a little more for energy or live with a lack of energy and the continuation of rotating brownouts,” he added

Davaoeña Jasmine Lee, won a seat in Korean Parliament!

MANILA – Philippine-born Korean Jasmine Lee won a seat for proportional representation at the 19th Korean National Assembly during the general elections held on April 11, the Philippine embassy in Seoul said Thursday.

The 35-year-old Lee, a widow of a Korean, is the first parliamentarian from the growing immigrant community of South Korea.

Lee ran under the ruling Saenuri (New Frontier) Party, formerly known as the Grand National Party. Saenuri won 25 out of a total of 54 seats for party list representatives. Lee was number 15 on the list.

The ruling Saenuri party also grabbed the majority votes for the 300 parliamentary seats by winning 152 seats.

“We are all very proud that a full-blooded Filipino is being given the opportunity to be a member of the Korean Parliament,” Vice President Jejomar Binay said during his address to Filipino community leaders in South Korea on March 25 where Lee was a special guest.

“It shows that Korea is prepared to extend the opportunity to become a public servant even to those who were not born here,” Binay said.

“Ms. Lee has once again made Filipinos in Korea proud in her latest string of achievements as a naturalized Korean. She has distinguished herself as an ardent advocate of multiculturalism in Korean society,” Ambassador Luis Cruz said in a statement from the embassy.

“We hope that she will continue to promote the rights and welfare of the 1.2 million growing immigrant community in Korea,” he added.

Lee grew up in Davao and met her future husband Lee Dong-ho in 1994 when she was a college freshman majoring in Biology at the Ateneo de Davao University. They got married in April 1995, and subsequently moved to Korea. They have two children. She became a Korean citizen in 1998.

Tragedy struck the family, however, when her husband died of heart attack two years ago while rescuing his daughter who was caught in a whirlpool in a mountain stream in Okcheon-dong, Gangwon province while on a family vacation.

Since 2006, Lee has appeared as a panelist on the KBS television program ”Love in Asia.” Last year, she essayed the role of the mother of the lead actor in the highly acclaimed Korean movie “Wandeuki” (English title: Punch) which drew 5.3 million viewers.

In January of this year, she received the Korea Image Millstone Award, which is given to people who successfully blended into the Korean society and helped it become a better place. She regularly gives lectures about multiculturalism in Korea for teachers and student leaders. She is the Secretary General of Waterdrop, a charity formed by foreign spouses of Koreans.
