Night Life in Davao City dead after 1 a.m., new Liquor Ban to take effect soon!

Once the amended liquor ban which was signed by Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte take effect which prohibits the serving, selling and drinking of intoxicating drinks along city streets, parking areas and uninhabited places from 1 a.m. to 8 a.m., the city’s night life will eventually be good as dead!

The city mayor inked the Ordinance No. 004-13 Series of 2013 (An Order Amending Ordinance No. 1627, Series of 1994, “An Ordinance regulating the operation of business establishments selling liquors, coconut wine and other nature wine and other alcoholic beverages in the City of Davao) in August.

The City Council approved the ordinance in July.

However, the amended ordinance is not yet in effect since it needs to be published in a newspaper of general circulation in the locality for three consecutive times as provided under Section 5 of the ordinance.

It has already been published once. Two more publications are needed before it takes effect.

The amended ordinance mandates that the prohibition of drinking and consuming liquor is not only limited to all business establishments selling and serving liquors, alcoholic beverages, coconut wine (tuba) and other nature wines, but in all other public places in the city.

First offense calls for an administrative fine of P3,000, while the second offense calls for a fine of P5,000 and imprisonment of three months or both upon the discretion of the court. For the third offense, a fine of P5,000, or one year imprisonment will be slapped against the offender and his or her business permit will be revoked.

Many businesses that caters to liquor like bars, Karaoke, and the likes will have to close their establishment by 1 a.m. or stop selling alcohol related products.

There is a big possibility that these establishment will close since alcoholn drinkers usually go out late at night. They may even suffer losses in the long run.

What is your take on this?
